Mount Nasu is a volcanic mountain group in northern Tochigi Prefecture, known for multiple peaks, fumarolic activity in its higher crater zones, and hot-spring resorts at its base. The area is a long-standing destination for hikers and visitors seeking onsen.

Trails climb to several summits and pass volcanic features such as steaming vents and rocky crater areas; the lower slopes are developed with inns and public baths that serve visitors after climbs. Chairlifts and local transport reduce walking on some approaches.

The volcanic complex formed through multiple eruptions over geological time and continues to exhibit fumarolic activity in parts of the upper crater areas. Human use has centered on shrine sites, mountain recreation, and hot-spring tourism.

The range sits on the northern edge of Tochigi Prefecture near the border with Fukushima Prefecture, north of the city of Utsunomiya. Road and rail links connect the Nasu resort zone to the Kanto region.

How to Get to Mount Nasu #

To reach the Nasu area from Tokyo take the Tohoku Shinkansen north to Nasushiobara Station (also written Nasu-Shiobara) and then transfer to local buses serving Nasu Onsen and the Nasu Ropeway (local bus operators provide regular/seasonal services). The Nasu Ropeway lifts visitors toward the high-elevation trails and the volcanic peaks; from the ropeway station there are marked hiking routes to the mountaintops. By car, drive north from Tokyo on the Tohoku Expressway toward the Nasu/Tochigi exits - expect roughly 2-3 hours driving (depending on route and traffic).

Tips for Visiting Mount Nasu #

  • Use the Nasu Ropeway (Sanroku station) to reach the Chausu crater area quickly-this gives easy access to the volcanic landscape without a long technical climb.
  • Check Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) volcanic warnings before you go and be prepared for temporary closures of the crater area when activity levels rise.
  • Avoid national-holiday weekends if you can; weekdays or early mornings give clearer views (autumn brings the best foliage and usually clearer skies).
