The mountain was named for New York Governor William L. Marcy in the 19th century and has been a focus for early American mountaineering and Adirondack conservation efforts. Trails and lean-tos developed over the 20th century as outdoor recreation in the region expanded.
Mount Marcy sits within the High Peaks Wilderness of the Adirondack Park in Essex County, in northeastern New York State. Access is commonly from the nearby hamlet and trailhead areas around Lake Placid and Keene.

How to Get to Mount Marcy #
The usual trailhead for Mount Marcy is the Adirondack Loj/Heart Lake area off NY‑73 near Lake Placid. From Lake Placid follow NY‑73 to the Adirondack Loj (look for signs to Heart Lake/Adirondack Loj) and park at the trailhead; from there marked hiking trails (the Van Hoevenberg/Adirondack trail network) lead to the summit. This is a long backcountry hike on maintained trails-plan for a full day and check Loj parking/shuttle rules in peak season.
Tips for Visiting Mount Marcy #
- Begin the standard Adirondack Loj/Van Hoevenberg route at first light-parking at the Adirondak Loj/Heart Lake area fills early and early starts also avoid frequent afternoon thunderstorms on the High Peaks.
- If possible, visit outside the busiest summer holiday weekends or start very early on those weekends; the summit of Mount Marcy gets crowded and you'll get the clearest panoramic views in the quieter hours.
- Carry a map and be prepared for exposed sections near the summit; even on clear days visibility can change quickly, so plan your turnaround times to avoid late-afternoon weather.
