How to Get to Mount Lycabettus #
Mount Lycabettus rises above central Athens in the Kolonaki neighbourhood. You can reach the foot by walking from Kolonaki or the city centre (Syntagma/Plaka) in about 15-25 minutes, or take the Lycabettus funicular from Kolonaki for a short ride near the base and then a brief walk to the summit. Taxis and city buses also serve Kolonaki; once at the funicular or upper road parking it’s a short walk to the viewpoint.
Tips for Visiting Mount Lycabettus #
- Time your visit for either early morning or sunset-those times offer the best light for Acropolis views and are quieter than the peak mid-afternoon crowd surge.
- Use the funicular from Kolonaki for a quick, less strenuous ascent and to avoid the steep, heavily visited Plaka steps; the stair route from Plaka is scenic but attracts many tourists.
- Make a short detour to the small chapel of St. George at the summit and walk the western ridge for quieter viewpoints of the Acropolis and the Aegean that many visitors overlook.
