Mount Lemmon
Mountain Sky island near Tucson with alpine recreation areas
Northeast of Tucson, Mount Lemmon rises along the Catalina Highway with cooler forests, an observatory, occasional winter snow and hiking and cycling routes popular with locals.
Mount Lemmon is the highest summit of the Santa Catalina Mountains in southern Arizona, rising to about 2,791 meters (9,157 feet). It sits northeast of Tucson and forms a prominent ‘sky island’ with cooler, forested slopes above the Sonoran Desert.
The mountain offers a rapid transition in ecosystems from desert at the base to pine forest near the top, with numerous hiking trails and campgrounds. A paved road reaches near the summit, providing access to the Mount Lemmon Observatory and a small seasonal ski area, so visitors include hikers, stargazers and seasonal winter-sport users.
The peak was named in honor of the botanist Sara Plummer Lemmon; the area has been used for recreation and scientific observation for many decades, including astronomical research at the observatory.
Mount Lemmon is located in the Santa Catalina range about 30 kilometers northeast of downtown Tucson, Arizona, rising sharply above the surrounding desert.
- Elevation: Summit elevation about 2,791 meters (roughly 9,157 feet), making it the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains and a classic 'sky island' environment.
- Access and facilities: A paved route (Catalina Highway) and the Mount Lemmon Observatory near the summit make it unusually accessible for a high-elevation desert range.
