Mount Kurama is a 584-metre wooded mountain north of Kyoto city, known for its temple and religious associations. The slopes host a historic temple complex and accessible walking routes.

Trails lead from the small village around Kurama Station up to Kurama-dera and onward along a ridge toward Kibune, a commonly walked route of roughly 4 kilometres on the ridge section. The mountain is also known for the Kurama Fire Festival on 22 October and for local hot springs at the base used by day visitors.

Kurama-dera and the surrounding paths have been a regional pilgrimage and cultural site for centuries, and the mountain is associated with tengu folklore and ascetic practices. The hillside temple precincts and carved statues are focal points for visitors as much as the summit views.

The mountain sits north of Kyoto and is reachable by the Eizan Railway to Kurama Station, followed by a short uphill walk to the temple trailheads. It is a common day trip for people staying in Kyoto.

  • Elevation and access: Summit elevation is about 584 metres and the main temple sits mid-slope, making the mountain a popular half-day hike from Kyoto.
  • Kurama Fire Festival: An annual fire festival is held on the mountain on 22 October and draws locals and visitors to the temple precincts and nearby streets.

What to See #

  • Kurama-dera: A Buddhist temple complex on the mountain slopes with halls and terraces that are reached by foot from the village at the base.
  • Kurama Onsen: A small hot-spring facility used by walkers and visitors after hiking the mountain trails.
  • Kurama-Kibune ridge trail: A ridge trail linking Kurama and the nearby village of Kibune, commonly hiked as an out-and-back or point-to-point route of roughly 4 kilometres of mountain ridge walking.
