Mount Kurama
Mountain Sacred mountain north of Kyoto, famous temple sites
Forest trails and Kurama-dera temple draw visitors up Mount Kurama; the mountain is known for its hiking paths, a cable lift and the Kurama Fire Festival held each October.
Mount Kurama is a 584-metre wooded mountain north of Kyoto city, known for its temple and religious associations. The slopes host a historic temple complex and accessible walking routes.
Trails lead from the small village around Kurama Station up to Kurama-dera and onward along a ridge toward Kibune, a commonly walked route of roughly 4 kilometres on the ridge section. The mountain is also known for the Kurama Fire Festival on 22 October and for local hot springs at the base used by day visitors.
Kurama-dera and the surrounding paths have been a regional pilgrimage and cultural site for centuries, and the mountain is associated with tengu folklore and ascetic practices. The hillside temple precincts and carved statues are focal points for visitors as much as the summit views.
