Mount Kumgang is a coastal mountain range in North Korea’s Kangwon Province noted for its steep granite peaks, waterfalls and scenic coastal cliffs. The range’s highest point, Kuryongbong, rises to about 1,638 metres and is a dominant landmark.

The mountain area contains numerous named peaks, valleys and waterfalls that have long been celebrated in Korean art and poetry. It has been developed for sightseeing with paths, viewpoints and resort facilities during periods when tourism has been active.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries the area became the focus of organized tourism, including inter-Korean visits from South Korea, but those operations have been intermittent and subject to political decisions. The landscape remains valued for its natural scenery and cultural associations.

Geographically Mount Kumgang sits on North Korea’s southeastern flank, where the range descends toward the Sea of Japan (East Sea), and forms a prominent coastal mountain landscape in Kangwon Province.

  • Highest point: The highest summit, Kuryongbong, reaches approximately 1,638 metres and is the best-known peak in the range.
  • Tourism history: The area was the focus of inter-Korean tourism initiatives; organized tours from the South operated until the late 2000s and infrastructure was developed for visitors before being suspended.
