Mount Kita (Kita-dake) rises to about 3,193 meters and is the second-highest mountain in Japan, located in the southern part of the Akaishi Mountains, commonly called the Minami Alps. It is a granite-dominated peak popular with experienced hikers and mountaineers.
Trails to the summit are typically undertaken as multi-day hikes with mountain huts and camps used by climbers; the mountain offers alpine ridgelines, rocky summits and high-elevation flora. The standard approaches lead through established mountain paths that require good fitness and mountain experience.
The mountain developed geologically as part of the Japanese Alps and has long been visited by alpinists and naturalists; its prominence and height make it a principal feature of the Minami Alps range.
Mount Kita sits within the Minami Alps area, inside a protected mountain region with access from valleys to the west and east; the nearest major cities are located in central Honshu several tens of kilometers away.
