Mount Kirishima

Mount Kirishima is a volcanic mountain group on southern Kyushu, Japan, straddling Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures. Its highest summit, Karakunidake, reaches about 1,700 metres.

The area features multiple volcanic cones, crater lakes and alpine plateaus used for hiking and sightseeing. Notable visitor highlights include panoramic ridge walks, crater viewpoints and nearby hot-spring towns that serve as bases for excursions. Several peaks offer trails of varying length and difficulty, from short crater lookouts to full-day ridge traverses.

The range is volcanically active with a history of eruptions in the modern era; individual cones have formed and changed in the 20th and 21st centuries. Volcanic monitoring is in place and access to specific summits has been restricted at times for safety.

Geographically it sits on Kyushu island where the volcanic front runs through southern Japan, with road and rail links from nearby towns such as Kirishima and Ebino. The area is reachable from the larger cities of Kagoshima and Miyazaki by regional buses and local transport.

• Hiking access: Several peaks are clustered around an alpine plateau used for hiking, with boardwalks and trails concentrated near Ebino and the higher ridges.

What to See #

• Karakunidake (highest peak) - about 1,700 m: A group of volcanic peaks that includes an active crater and several smaller cones, with accessible trails and crater lakes on the flanks.
• Shinmoedake (active cone): An active summit that has produced recent eruptions and is monitored for volcanic activity; access can be restricted during unrest.
• Lake Miike: A deep crater lake on the mountain group that is a common stop for tourists and hikers.
