The area around the mountain includes the well-known Gergeti Trinity Church, which stands on a ridge with views to the peak.
Geologically Kazbek is a dormant stratovolcano and forms part of the high Caucasus chain. It has been a focus of local folklore and pilgrimage for centuries and became popular with European alpinists during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Mount Kazbek lies in northern Georgia, near the town of Stepantsminda, roughly 150 kilometers north of the capital Tbilisi by road, and is accessed via the Georgian Military Highway.

How to Get to Mount Kazbek #
The usual gateway for Mount Kazbek is Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) in northern Georgia. From Tbilisi drive north along the Georgian Military Highway (S3/E117) to Stepantsminda - the road distance is about 150 km and the drive takes roughly 3 hours under normal conditions. From Stepantsminda visitors transfer by local 4x4 or taxi toward the Gergeti Trinity Church area and start the trek to higher slopes from there.
Tips for Visiting Mount Kazbek #
- Use Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) as your base-most treks to Gergeti Trinity Church and higher routes up Kazbek start from the village along the Georgian Military Highway.
- Plan climbs and glacier routes in the stable season (generally late June to early September) and hire a certified local mountain guide for anything above the church trail; weather and crevasse conditions change quickly.
- Start hikes very early in the day to minimize exposure to typical afternoon storms and to enjoy clearer mountain views and fewer people on the lower approaches to Gergeti Trinity Church.
