Mount Kaikoma is a peak in the Akaishi Mountains (the Southern Alps) of central Honshu, Japan, reaching about 2,967 metres in elevation. It is recognized as one of Japan’s notable alpine summits.
The mountain offers steep granite ridges, alpine meadows and high-elevation views typical of the Southern Alps; routes approach from valleys in Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures. Trails are used for day and multi-day climbs during the summer climbing season, and ridgeline walks connect to neighboring peaks.
Kaikoma is a natural mountain formed by tectonic uplift and erosion; it has long been a destination for Japanese alpinists and was included among lists of notable mountains compiled in the 20th century. Access and route development increased with the growth of recreational mountaineering in the postwar era.
The peak sits on the main ridge of the Akaishi Mountains in central Honshu, near the boundary between Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures. It is inland from the Pacific coast and part of a high, rugged range dominated by granite and alpine terrain.
