Near Heraklion on Crete, Mount Juktas preserves Minoan peak-sanctuary ruins and short walking routes. Archaeology enthusiasts and walkers combine summit traces with coastal views over the north coast.
Mount Juktas (Iuktas) is a limestone mountain near Heraklion on the island of Crete, rising to about 811 metres and forming a conspicuous landmark above the Knossos plain. It was used in the Bronze Age as a Minoan peak sanctuary and ceremonial site.
Paths lead to the summit where archaeological remains associated with Minoan ritual activity have been recorded; the mountain also offers panoramic views over central Crete and the north coast.
Excavations and archaeological study in the 20th century documented votive deposits and sanctuary structures, linking Juktas to the religious landscape of Minoan Crete.
The mountain stands inland from the northern coast of Crete, close to the modern communities around Heraklion and the archaeological site of Knossos.

What to See #
- Minoan peak sanctuary: The peak area contains remnants of a Bronze Age Minoan peak sanctuary where votive clay figurines and other offerings were placed by worshippers.
How to Get to Mount Juktas #
Mount Juktas (Jukhtas) sits just south of Heraklion on Crete near the village of Archanes. From Heraklion you can drive south on local roads to Archanes (roughly a 15-30 minute drive depending on traffic) and park near the village; local KTEL regional buses also run from Heraklion to Archanes (check current timetables). The trailhead and archaeological sites on Juktas are a short walk from Archanes village along local tracks.
If driving from elsewhere on Crete, use the national road toward Heraklion and follow signs to Archanes/Juktas.

Best visited spring or autumn for comfortable hiking and to avoid the high summer heat common on Crete.
