Mount Hood
Mountain Oregon volcanic peak and prominent Cascade stratovolcano
Northeast of Portland, Mount Hood dominates the skyline as Oregon’s highest peak; visitors ski at Timberline, attempt glacier climbs, hike the Timberline Trail, and photograph its snowcap from Columbia River viewpoints.
Mount Hood is a stratovolcano in northern Oregon and the state’s highest peak at 11,249 feet (3,429 meters). It is a prominent landmark visible from the Portland area and a focal point for regional outdoor recreation.
The mountain supports year‑round recreational activity centered on facilities such as Timberline Lodge and the Palmer Glacier ski area, plus hiking, climbing and backcountry skiing routes. Many visitors come for day hikes, winter sport, and guided summit attempts during stable summer weather.
The peak is a volcanic edifice formed over multiple eruptions in the late Pleistocene and Holocene and remains classified as an active volcano. Over the 20th and 21st centuries it developed a network of trails, lodges and ski areas that serve both tourists and climbers.
Geographically it rises on the Cascade Range about 50 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon, and is accessed from several mountain towns and highway corridors on its flanks.
