Mount Herzl
Mountain Israel's national cemetery and memorial on Jerusalem's hill
Mount Herzl serves as Israel’s national cemetery and memorial complex in Jerusalem; visitors attend military memorials, state commemorations and walk paths marked by plaques and monuments.
Mount Herzl is a hill in western Jerusalem that serves as Israel’s national cemetery and a principal site of state memorials. The site is named for Theodor Herzl and functions as both a burial ground for national leaders and a place for official commemorations.
Prominent features include the tomb of Theodor Herzl, the Herzl Museum, and extensive military cemetery plots where Israeli leaders and soldiers are buried; the precinct is used for national ceremonies and remembrance events. Paths and memorial gardens connect the different plots and provide viewpoints over parts of west Jerusalem.
Theodor Herzl’s remains were reinterred on the hill in 1949 and the area was developed thereafter as the national cemetery and memorial complex. Over time additional memorials and museum spaces have been added to commemorate leaders, soldiers and victims of conflicts.
Geographically the site sits in the western part of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, and is a short drive from central Jerusalem and key civic landmarks.
- Nearby memorial: Yad Vashem is adjacent to Mount Herzl and is commonly visited on the same itinerary, forming a combined memorial precinct in western Jerusalem.
- Ceremonial use: Official state ceremonies for Israel's Memorial Day and Independence Day are held on the hill, when access may be restricted or crowded.
What to See #
- Theodor Herzl's Tomb: A tomb and memorial site for Theodor Herzl, reinterred there in 1949, located near the summit and forming the focal point of the hill.
- Herzl Museum: Exhibition space documenting Herzl's life and the Zionist movement, sited near the tomb and intended for visitors and educational groups.
- National Military Cemetery: Large military cemetery plots and memorials for fallen soldiers, including marked graves, the Garden of the Missing Soldiers and sections used for state funerals.

Tips for Visiting Mount Herzl #
- Start at the Herzl Museum/visitor area to get orientation about the site and recommended walking routes, then follow the marked path through the national and military sections to see the principal memorials in sequence.
- Visit midweek and earlier in the day to avoid school and organized groups that concentrate on weekends and Israeli memorial days; the site is large, so an early start gives a quieter, more contemplative visit.
- Combine Mount Herzl with a short walk to the adjacent Yad Vashem complex (nearby) rather than trying to do both hurriedly; most visitors rush one site and miss important exhibits at the other.
