Mount Heng (Hunan) Mountain

Mount Heng in Hunan Province, often called Nanyue Hengshan, is the southern of China’s Five Great Mountains and an important religious and cultural destination with temple complexes and pilgrimage routes.

The mountain is noted for its long-established temple complexes, notably the Nanyue Temple, pilgrimage stairways and forested slopes that lead to Zhurong Peak at roughly 1,300 metres. Visitors come for religious pilgrimage, temple architecture, and relatively short mountain walks rather than high-altitude climbing.

Mount Heng has been a religious centre for Taoist and Buddhist practice for centuries, with temples and shrines rebuilt and expanded across successive dynasties. The site retains layers of historical architecture and continues to function as an active place of worship and pilgrimage.

The mountain massif lies in Hunan Province near the city of Hengyang in south-central China and occupies a prominent position in the local landscape as a named cultural and natural landmark.

• Nanyue Temple complex: The Nanyue (Southern Peak) temple complex near the mountain’s base is the main historical religious site associated with the mountain and attracts pilgrims and visitors.
• Zhurong Peak: Zhurong Peak is the mountain’s principal summit and the highest point on the Hengshan massif, reached by trails and stairways from lower temple areas.

Mount Heng is accessible from Hengyang city by bus or car; local shuttle buses and cable cars operate up to temple complexes and higher viewpoints. The nearest major rail station is Hengyang; from there buses or taxis make the 1-2 hour trip to the mountain base.

• Start early to avoid afternoon cloud and for better light on summit temples.
• Visit the Nanyue Temple complex and the ancient pilgrimage routes; some shrines open earlier than others.
• Wear good shoes - the mountain has many stone steps and switchbacks with a lot of local foot traffic.
