Mount Hakodate is a volcanic cone overlooking the city of Hakodate in southern Hokkaido, Japan. It rises to about 334 meters and is a well-established urban viewpoint with a developed summit park.

The mountain’s best-known feature is the ridge-top observation area that provides panoramic views of Hakodate, the bay and the Tsugaru Strait; the city lights at night are a principal draw. The summit is reached by the Hakodateyama Ropeway, by a short drive up a paved road, or by several hiking trails.

The cone is an extinct volcanic feature whose slopes have been integrated into the city’s recreational infrastructure; the summit area includes viewing platforms, a park, and visitor facilities.

Located at the southern tip of the Hakodate peninsula, the mountain sits immediately adjacent to Hakodate’s urban area and is a short drive or ropeway ride from the city center.

How to Get to Mount Hakodate #

Hakodate is served by Hakodate Airport and by the JR Hakodate Main Line; the mountain’s cable car station is a short walk from Motomachi district and about 10-15 minutes from Hakodate Station by taxi or local bus. For those on foot, the Eastern slope trail begins near Motomachi and is a roughly 1.5-2 hour climb.
