Mount Guanyin, commonly called Guanyinshan, is a volcanic hill in New Taipei City north of Taipei that rises to about 616 metres. It is a prominent coastal landmark overlooking Tamsui and the Taiwan Strait and is popular for short, steep hikes and seaside views.

The mountain’s trails lead to several ridgeline lookouts and viewpoints that are especially popular at sunrise and sunset. Vegetation includes secondary forest and rocky coastal slopes, and the ridgeline affords urban and ocean panoramas.

Guanyinshan is a remnant of volcanic activity and has long been used for recreation rather than settlement. Trail infrastructure and local transport links have made it a frequent half-day outing for people based in Taipei and New Taipei.

Geographically it sits on the northern edge of the Taipei metropolitan area near the districts of Tamsui and Bali, about a short drive northwest of central Taipei and immediately above the Tamsui River estuary.

  • Proximity to Taipei: Relatively close to Taipei, making it a common half-day hike for residents and visitors who want coastal views and sunsets without long travel.
  • Trail character: Trails are short but steep; expect a rapid elevation gain over a few kilometres and exposed viewpoints near the ridgeline.

What to See #

  • Trail network and lookouts: A network of maintained trails that climb from the Tamsui/Bali lowlands to multiple lookout points and the main summit, offering coastal and urban views toward the Taiwan Strait and Taipei.
  • Coastal viewpoints: Coastal ridgelines and basalt outcrops that create the mountain's steep slopes and provide multiple seaside viewpoints toward Tamsui and the Taiwan Strait.
