Mount Gongga
Mountain Highest peak of Sichuan with glaciated alpine terrain
Known as Minya Konka, Mount Gongga in Sichuan is the province’s highest peak and a technical objective for experienced mountaineers; the surrounding range features glaciers, deep valleys and Tibetan cultural areas.
Mount Gongga (Minya Konka) is the highest mountain in Sichuan province, China, rising to approximately 7,556 metres. It is the dominant summit of the Daxue Shan and a major peak on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau.
The massif presents steep, heavily glaciated slopes and long technical climbing routes that attract experienced mountaineers; valleys below the range offer trekking approaches and high-altitude base camp locations. The mountain’s glaciers and cirques are significant geographic features visible from approach valleys.
Western exploratory and mountaineering expeditions began in the early 20th century and culminated in the first recorded ascent in 1932 by an American climbing team. Since then the peak has been the focus of technical expeditions and scientific interest due to its elevation and glaciology.
Located in western Sichuan within the Daxue Shan range, Mount Gongga rises above deep river valleys on the eastern Tibetan Plateau margin and is accessed via long approaches through mountainous terrain.
- Elevation and difficulty: Highest peak in Sichuan province at 7,556 metres and located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, with severe weather and technical routes requiring experienced alpine skills.
- First ascent: First climbed in 1932 by an American expedition led by Terris Moore and Richard Burdsall, marking an early major ascent in Chinese high-mountain exploration.

Tips for Visiting Mount Gongga #
- Plan visits between late spring and early autumn (roughly May-October) when high mountain passes and access roads are most likely open and avalanche/heavy-snow hazards are reduced.
- If you intend to climb or do technical trekking, obtain the necessary Chinese permits and hire an experienced local mountain guide-Gongga/Minya Konka is remote, glaciated and regulated, not a casual hike.
- Allow extra days for acclimatization in the nearest Tibetan towns (e.g., Kangding area) before attempting higher camps; weather windows can be short, so build flexibility into your itinerary.
Best Time to Visit Mount Gongga #
Best visited in late spring (May-June) or early autumn (Sept-Oct) when weather windows for climbing and clear views are most likely.
