Mount Gerizim is a limestone mountain in the West Bank, sacred to the Samaritan community and associated with ancient ritual traditions. The peak is a central religious site for Samaritans and contains a living community and cultural sites near the summit.

Visitors to the mountain find Samaritan cultural institutions, a small synagogue and a museum operated by the local community, along with archaeological remains linked to past ritual structures. The mountain is also a focal point for annual Samaritan pilgrimages and ceremonies.

Historically the mountain is identified in biblical and Samaritan tradition as the site of blessings and as a rival cultic centre to nearby Mount Ebal; it has been a place of continuous religious significance for millennia. Archaeological remains attest to long-standing ritual use of the summit area.

Mount Gerizim rises above the city of Nablus in the central highlands of the West Bank and is accessed by road from the city; the peak’s slopes are dotted with terraced land, small settlements and the Samaritan village near the top.

  • Height and religious significance: Summit elevation about 881 metres and regarded as the holiest mountain by the Samaritan community, who perform pilgrimage rites there.
  • Access and location: Overlooks the city of Nablus and is readily accessible by road, with local parking and paths leading toward the summit area and archaeological sites.

What to See #

  • Samaritan village and cultural site: The Samaritan village near the summit maintains a small synagogue, a museum of Samaritan culture and provides seasonal guided visits.
  • Archaeological remains: Archaeological remains on the mountain include the foundations of ancient ritual installations associated with Samaritan worship traditions.
