Mount Fitz Roy
Mountain Iconic granite peak on Argentina–Chile border, technical climbs
Near El Chaltén in Los Glaciares National Park, Mount Fitz Roy’s granite towers attract technical climbers and hikers aiming for viewpoints like Laguna de los Tres; routes demand alpine experience and offer close glacier and granite-face views.
Mount Fitz Roy (also Cerro Fitz Roy) is a dramatic granite massif in Patagonia on the border region between Argentina and Chile, within the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. The peak is an iconic objective for climbers and landscape photographers and is noted for its steep granite faces.
Hikers can reach classic viewpoints such as Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Capri via well‑marked trails from the nearby village of El Chaltén, typically used as the staging point for day hikes and multi‑day routes. The mountain also attracts technical alpinists to its steep granite spires and mixed rock-ice routes.
The mountain was first climbed by a French expedition led by Lionel Terray and others in 1952, after decades of earlier reconnaissance and attempted ascents. Over time the area developed a small tourism base around El Chaltén and the trails inside Los Glaciares National Park.
It sits in the southern Andes, on the margins of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and within Los Glaciares National Park, with El Chaltén at the foot of its trail network.
- Trailhead: Most arrivals approach via the nearby village of El Chaltén, which is the established base for trailheads and services for hikes to the classic viewpoints.
- Best season: The mountain rises sharply from the surrounding icefield and is best viewed in clear weather; the austral summer (December to February) offers the most stable conditions for treks and climbs.
What to See #
- El Chaltén: A small frontier town that functions as the usual trailhead for treks to the base viewpoints and camps used by climbers and photographers.
- Laguna de los Tres: A high-elevation lakeshore viewpoint reached by a popular day hike that provides some of the most direct, unobstructed views of the granite faces of the massif.
- Laguna Capri: A smaller, nearer lake used by many hikers as an early viewpoint and photo stop on routes approaching the main viewpoints.
- Los Glaciares National Park: Part of Los Glaciares National Park, the protected area contains the mountain, surrounding glaciers and trail network used by day-hikers and mountaineers.
How to Get to Mount Fitz Roy #
Most visitors reach Mount Fitz Roy via El Chaltén, Argentina. Fly into El Calafate (FTE) from Buenos Aires, then take a bus or drive north to El Chaltén (about 3 hours, roughly 220 km by road). From El Chaltén the established trails to viewpoints of Fitz Roy start from the village; the hike to Laguna de los Tres (the classic viewpoint) is a strenuous multi‑hour trek of roughly 8-10 km one way (about 16-20 km round trip) from town, with several shorter lookouts closer to the village.
Tips for Visiting Mount Fitz Roy #
- Start pre-dawn from El Chaltén and aim to reach Laguna de los Tres for sunrise - that timing often yields the clearest views of Fitz Roy before afternoon cloud builds.
- Use El Chaltén as your base: the main trailheads are accessed from town (no vehicle approach to the lake), so plan logistics and time to allow for the long out-and-back hikes to the classic viewpoints.
- If you want photos with fewer people, continue past the primary viewpoints to the quieter shores of Laguna Sucia and the Loma del Pliegue Tumbado approaches; most day visitors turn back at the main viewpoints.
