Mount Desert Island
Island Maine island containing Acadia National Park and towns
Maine’s Mount Desert Island hosts Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, with rocky headlands, carriage-road cycling, and Cadillac Mountain sunrise viewpoints. Visitors come for coastal hikes, lobster, boat trips, and ocean scenery.
Mount Desert Island is a large island off the coast of Maine in Hancock County and is the core landmass of Acadia National Park. It is a major regional destination for coastal scenery, hiking and outdoor recreation.
Key attractions include coastal headlands, rocky beaches, forested carriage roads, and prominent summits such as Cadillac Mountain. The island supports towns and visitor services, with Bar Harbor as the principal gateway and multiple trail and road access points into parkland.
The island was occupied by Indigenous peoples before European settlement and later developed for fishing, shipping and tourism; large land donations and conservation efforts in the early 20th century helped form Acadia National Park. Infrastructure such as the park’s carriage roads dates from that era and remains a significant visitor feature.
Mount Desert Island lies off the central coast of Maine and is served by ferry and road connections to the mainland; Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor are the island’s main towns.
- Acadia National Park: The island contains Acadia National Park, which preserves much of its rocky coastline, forests, and carriage-road network built in the early 20th century.
- Cadillac Mountain: Cadillac Mountain rises to about 466 metres and is famous for sunrise views; it can be reached by road and several hiking trails.
What to See #
- Cadillac Mountain: The highest summit of the island and eastern North America's first place to receive sunrise on certain days, rising to 466 metres (1,530 feet).
- Jordan Pond: A permanent freshwater lake and popular scenic area within Acadia with walking paths and a historic tearoom adjacent to the pond.
- Bar Harbor: The island's largest town and principal visitor gateway, serving as the main base for tourism services, accommodations and ferry connections.
- Sand Beach: A narrow pocket beach with glacially scoured granite outcrops and cold Atlantic waters located on the island's eastern shoreline within Acadia National Park.
How to Get to Mount Desert Island #
Mount Desert Island (home to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park) is reached by road from the Maine mainland via ME‑3/US‑1 across the causeway from Ellsworth. Driving from Bangor to Bar Harbor on MDI is roughly 50-80 km (about 1-1.5 hours depending on route and traffic). The island is also served by seasonal ferries and shuttles; once on the island US‑route and park loop roads provide access to trailheads and parking areas (walking distances from parking to trails vary by site).
Tips for Visiting Mount Desert Island #
- If you want the classic view with fewer people, be on Cadillac Mountain before sunrise or very early in the morning - it's the island's most popular viewpoint so arrive long before dawn to beat the queues.
- Use the free Island Explorer shuttle system and the Park Loop Road carefully (many popular pullouts fill early) to avoid parking headaches; the shuttle links major trailheads and nodes in Acadia National Park and reduces time spent hunting parking.
- Don't confine yourself to the Park Loop Road: spend part of your day on the quieter carriage roads and western-side trails (away from Sand Beach and Jordan Pond) to experience less-crowded scenery most visitors miss.
