Mount Cleveland (Alaska)

Mount Cleveland is an active stratovolcano on Chuginadak Island in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, with an elevation of about 1,730 meters (5,676 feet). It is one of the most frequently active volcanoes in the Aleutian arc.

The volcano has produced frequent explosive eruptions and ash plumes in recent decades, monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory; eruptions can generate ash clouds that affect aviation and nearby islands. The edifice is steep and rugged, typical of Aleutian stratovolcanoes.

Geologically it is part of the Aleutian volcanic arc formed by subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the North American Plate, and its activity has been documented by modern monitoring networks. Many eruptions since the 18th century have been recorded in historical and instrumental records.

Chuginadak Island lies in the central Aleutians; the volcano is remote with no permanent habitation, and the nearest large Alaskan cities are hundreds of kilometers away along the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian chain.
