Mount Circeo is a coastal promontory on the Lazio coast of central Italy, near the towns of San Felice Circeo and Sabaudia. It is a distinctive limestone headland that rises directly from the shore.
Visitors come for coastal cliffs, panoramic sea views and the promontory’s mix of maquis and woodlands. The area includes karst caves and archaeological sites as well as beaches on the surrounding coastline.
The headland has ancient and classical associations and has been occupied or used since prehistoric times; important Pleistocene-era human and faunal remains were recovered from cave sites on the promontory in the 20th century. In more recent centuries the area featured Roman and medieval activity and later protection as a natural area.
