Mount Cameroon
Volcano West Africa's highest volcano and active stratovolcano
Mount Cameroon, an active stratovolcano and West Africa’s highest peak, offers multi-day climbs through rainforest to alpine heath. Adventure hikers tackle marked routes and local guides lead ascents and an annual mountain race.
Mount Cameroon is an active volcano in southwest Cameroon and the country’s highest peak, reaching roughly 4,040 metres above sea level. It is the highest mountain in Cameroon and a dominant feature of the coastal landscape.
The mountain supports a range of habitats from lowland forests to montane vegetation and lava fields, and is popular with climbers who use established trails to reach the summit. Expeditions typically cross changing terrain and can involve several hours to a full-day ascent from the nearest lodgings.
Mount Cameroon has a volcanic origin and has produced eruptions during the 20th and 21st centuries; it is monitored for volcanic activity. Human use has included local agriculture on its lower slopes and mountain tourism centered on hiking and seasonal events.
Geographically it rises near the Gulf of Guinea and towers over the town of Buea on Cameroon’s southwest coast, within the broader Cameroon volcanic line.
- Local prominence: Rises directly above the coastal town of Buea on Cameroon's southwest coast and dominates the local landscape.
- Elevation and status: An active volcanic massif with a summit elevation of about 4,040 metres, making it the highest mountain in Cameroon and one of the highest in West/Central Africa.
How to Get to Mount Cameroon #
Mount Cameroon is approached from the nearby town of Buea, which is the usual base for ascents. Most travellers come via Douala (the nearest major city and international airport) and then drive to Buea by road; the drive from Douala to the Buea area takes about an hour to two hours depending on traffic and route. From Buea local operators arrange transfers to trailheads (often around Molyko/Likomba or along the southern slopes) and guided treks; a 4x4 or sturdy vehicle is recommended for some access roads.
Tips for Visiting Mount Cameroon #
- Plan your ascent in the dry season (roughly November-March) when trails are firmer and visibility is better; rainy-season climbs are often slippery and unsafe.
- Arrange permits, porters and a licensed local guide in Buea before setting off - guides handle park rules, trail conditions and overnight camp arrangements, which are required on most standard routes.
- Start a night ascent (around midnight) if you want to reach the summit for sunrise - that is the standard approach used by most summit parties to avoid daytime heat and to time the climb for clear early-morning views.
