Mount Bisoke
Volcano Active Virunga volcano featuring a crater lake
A volcanic cone in the Virunga Mountains on the Rwanda-DRC frontier, Mount Bisoke has a crater lake and day routes used by hikers; it’s also part of a region known for mountain gorillas.
Mount Bisoke is a volcanic mountain in the Virunga range that lies on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The summit contains a small, well-known crater lake.
Hikers ascend established trails from the Rwandan side through montane forest to reach the crater rim; the route involves sustained uphill walking and high-elevation terrain. The summit lake and surrounding volcanic landscape are primary reasons people climb Bisoke.
The mountain is one of the chain of Virunga volcanoes that stretch along the eastern African Rift. It has been part of the protected landscapes on both sides of the border and is commonly accessed from Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park trekking infrastructure.
Bisoke sits in the central Virunga Mountains, forming part of the border zone between northwestern Rwanda and eastern DRC, and is set among a mix of forested slopes and neighboring volcanic peaks.
- Access and routes: Most ascents start from the Rwandan side within Volcanoes National Park where marked trails lead up to the crater rim; climbs involve steep trail sections and high-elevation walking.
- Location and context: Part of the Virunga volcanic range and straddling the international frontier between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the mountain is commonly included in regional conservation and trekking activities.
What to See #
- Summit crater lake: A shallow crater lake sits at the summit and is one of the mountain's defining features, often reached by the main hiking route.
How to Get to Mount Bisoke #
Most visitors approach Mount Bisoke from the Rwanda side via Volcanoes National Park. From Kigali, drive or take a shuttle northwest to the Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri) / Kinigi area - the road trip is commonly about 2-3 hours by car (roughly 110-130 km depending on route). Park registration and a guided trek are required; guides will drive you from the park HQ/Kinigi trailhead to the start of the Bisoke route, and the hike to the summit is typically a multi‑hour (commonly 4-6 hour) guided return walk.
Tips for Visiting Mount Bisoke #
- Most trekkers climb Bisoke from the Rwandan side (Musanze/Ruhengeri) under permit from the Rwanda Development Board-this is the better-established, safer route compared with attempting access from the DRC side.
- Start very early (before dawn) to avoid the frequent afternoon cloud and rain that obscure the crater lake and to increase your chances of clear summit views; expect a steep, wet ascent and plan for a 4-6 hour round trip trek depending on fitness.
- Book a hike through a registered park operator in Volcanoes National Park so guides, park fees and transport are handled; guides also know seasonal trail conditions and how to navigate the bamboo/forest sections where visibility drops.
Best Time to Visit Mount Bisoke #
Aim for the drier months (roughly June-September or December-February) for clearer trails and easier trekking conditions.
