Mount Bandai
Mountain Volcanic mountain in Fukushima, known for crater lakes
Stratovolcano in Fukushima Prefecture noted for lakes formed after its 1888 eruption and for surrounding hiking trails. Visitors hike routes, visit Onuma and other crater lakes and ski nearby in winter.
Mount Bandai (Bandai-san) is a stratovolcano in Fukushima Prefecture that rises to about 1,816 metres and forms a distinctive landmark in the region. A major late 19th-century eruption reshaped its northern slopes and created a landscape of lakes, ponds and breached ridges.
Today’s visitors come for hiking routes, panoramic viewpoints and the colourful Goshikinuma ponds formed by mineral deposits in volcanic waters; a ropeway and local trails provide access to viewpoints and the Urabandai area. The volcanic terrain supports well-marked trails of varying difficulty and several lakeside and forested recreation areas.
The 1888 collapse and eruption are the defining geological events for Bandai, producing lakes such as Lake Hibara and the pond cluster; conservation and visitor facilities manage popular viewing spots and hiking access. The mountain lies north of Lake Inawashiro and near the towns of Inawashiro and Urabandai in central Fukushima.
- 1888 eruption: A catastrophic eruption in July 1888 caused the collapse of the mountain's north flank and created lakes and marshes now known as the Urabandai area, including Lake Hibara and the Goshikinuma ponds.
What to See #
- Summit cone: A volcanic cone rising to about 1,816 metres that dominates the surrounding Urabandai landscape and provides hiking routes to the summit rim.
- Goshikinuma ponds: The Goshikinuma cluster of mineral-rich ponds formed by the 1888 eruption; these small, multi-coloured pools are a major scenic attraction in the northern slopes and foothills.
How to Get to Mount Bandai #
Mount Bandai in Fukushima Prefecture is reached from JR Koriyama Station via the JR Ban’etsu West Line to Inawashiro/Urabandai (about 20-30 minutes by train), then a local bus or taxi into the Urabandai/Bandai area (20-30 minutes) to trailheads and visitor points. By car it’s roughly 40-60 minutes (35-50 km) from Koriyama via National Route 115 and local roads; from Tokyo take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama and then local connections to reach the mountain.
Tips for Visiting Mount Bandai #
- Go early in the day for clearer skies and views over the Urabandai/Goshikinuma area-the ponds and volcanic landscape are most photogenic before clouds build in the afternoon.
- Access the mountain from the popular Urabandai side if you want to combine the summit or ridge walks with views of the Goshikinuma (five-colored ponds) formed after the 1888 eruption; many visitors who only aim for the peak miss these nearby lakes.
- Use the Bandai area visitor information (local tourist offices near Urabandai/Kitashiobara) to pick the trail best suited to your plans and to confirm seasonal road or trail openings; some access roads and paths are closed or limited outside the main season.
- Take the longer ridge routes north or east if you want quieter trails-many day-hikers stick to the central routes, so branching to lesser-used approaches gives more solitude and different panoramas.
Best Time to Visit Mount Bandai #
The best time for hiking Mount Bandai is late spring through early autumn (May-October); winter offers snow activities but limits hiking access.
