Mount Asama is an active stratovolcano on central Honshu, Japan, and is one of the country’s more active volcanic centres. It occupies a position on the border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures.

The mountain features a summit crater with fumarolic activity and has produced eruptions in historical times; volcanic monitoring is maintained around the volcano. The flanks support hiking routes and winter recreation in nearby resorts.

Eruptive activity has occurred repeatedly during the historical record, and ash emissions or explosions have periodically affected neighbouring communities. Mount Asama’s volcanic behaviour is monitored by Japanese geological agencies.

Geographically it sits in central Japan on the boundary between Nagano and Gunma prefectures and forms a prominent peak in the surrounding landscape.

  • Volcanic activity: Mount Asama is an active volcano on Japan's main island and has a summit crater with ongoing fumarolic activity.
  • Location: It straddles prefectural borders in central Honshu and is a prominent landmark visible from surrounding valleys and towns.

Tips for Visiting Mount Asama #

  • Before planning any visit, check the Japan Meteorological Agency volcanic activity notices and local trail closures-Asama is an active volcano and access can change quickly.
  • Pick clear mornings for summit or viewpoint visits, as afternoons are more likely to produce cloud and haze that obscure the views of surrounding ranges.
  • Use established trailheads and consult local visitor information (town offices or mountain huts) for up‑to‑date route conditions rather than attempting to improvise routes.
