How to Get to Mount Aragats #

Mount Aragats is the large peak northwest of Yerevan. The usual approach is by car from Yerevan: drive northwest on the M1 (Yerevan-Ashtarak-Gyumri) toward Ashtarak and then follow local roads north/west toward Aparan and the Aragatsotn area to reach the mountain’s trailheads. The drive from central Yerevan to the base of Aragats is roughly 40-60 km and typically takes about 1-1.5 hours by car depending on the exact trailhead chosen.

Once you reach the mountain access roads there are parking areas near the main trailheads; hiking routes and alpine huts start within a short walk from those parking spots.

Tips for Visiting Mount Aragats #

  • Climb Mount Aragats in the summer months (June-September) for the safest, snow‑free conditions; winter ascents require alpine experience and proper equipment.
  • Start from the Lake Kari (Kari) area on the southern slopes - it's the common base for non‑technical ascents and leaves you well placed for the crater plateau and summit attempts.
  • Acclimatize and watch the weather: conditions on Aragats change quickly, so plan a flexible schedule, start early in the day for summit pushes, and consider hiring a local guide if you're unfamiliar with Armenian mountain weather and routes.
