Mount Ainslie is a prominent hill in the Australian Capital Territory immediately northeast of central Canberra, with a summit elevation of 843 meters. It is a well-known local landmark and principal viewpoint over the city.
The summit lookout gives panoramic views across the Australian War Memorial, Lake Burley Griffin and the Parliamentary Triangle, with clear sightlines to Parliament House and the surrounding Brindabella Range. The hill is a popular short hike and running route for residents and visitors and also attracts photographers for sunrise and sunset shots.
The name commemorates James Ainslie, an early 19th-century settler in the Canberra district. The hill features in Walter Burley Griffin’s 1912 plan for Canberra - the city’s civic axis aligns from Mount Ainslie through ANZAC Parade to the lake and parliamentary precinct.
Mount Ainslie sits within the Canberra Nature Park on the northeastern edge of the city, adjacent to the suburbs of Campbell and Reid and about 3 kilometers northeast of Canberra’s central business district. The landscape is chiefly native eucalypt woodland on grassed slopes with the Australian War Memorial at the northern foot.
