The Mosque of Cristo de la Luz in Toledo is a small medieval mosque completed in 999 AD and later converted into a Christian chapel; it is among the best-preserved small mosque buildings from al-Andalus in Spain. The building is compact and architecturally notable for its early medieval Iberian mosque plan.
Inside, the prayer hall is arranged as a grid of nine bays divided by horseshoe arches on short columns, and a later apse and Christian fittings were added after the Christian conquest of Toledo. Interpretive panels and careful conservation reveal both the Islamic origins and later Christian phases.
Built at the end of the 10th century, the monument was adapted to Christian use after the city changed hands in the late 11th century and has survived as a small religious building and historical monument since the medieval period.
The mosque-chapel stands in Toledo’s historic centre, within the old city fabric and near other major monuments along the Tagus river and the medieval streets of the walled town.
