Geothermal attractions such as the Boiling Lake, the steam-venting Valley of Desolation, the river gorge of Titou and several waterfalls and rainforest pools; a network of trails links these points and attracts hikers and nature visitors. Trails range from short walks to multi-hour, strenuous hikes and traverse montane rainforest and valley terrain.
The park’s landscape and attractions are the result of ongoing volcanic and hydrothermal activity on the island; its natural values led to international protection in 1997. Over the 20th century the area was progressively developed with marked trails and visitor facilities to manage tourism and access to sensitive sites.
