Morimond Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in northeastern France, founded in the early 12th century and historically one of the important Cistercian motherhouses. The abbey was influential in the order’s expansion and exercised authority over several daughter houses.
Today the site survives largely as ruins of the abbey church and conventual buildings, with archaeological remains and fragments of the cloister visible. The surviving fabric and earthworks record its medieval plan and later phases of use and neglect.
The abbey was founded in the 12th century as part of the rapid expansion of the Cistercian order, later declined in wealth and influence and was suppressed during the upheavals of the Revolutionary period, after which the monastic buildings fell into ruin.
The ruins stand in a rural part of the Grand Est region of France and are reached from nearby small towns and villages in the surrounding agricultural landscape.
