Moresby Island
Island Largest island in Haida Gwaii, British Columbia
Part of Haida Gwaii off British Columbia’s coast, with temperate rainforests, old‑growth cedar and Haida cultural sites; visitors arrive for Gwaii Haanas tours, wildlife viewing and indigenous art.
Moresby Island is the second-largest island in the Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) archipelago off the northern coast of British Columbia. It is a sparsely populated, largely forested island noted for its cultural sites and protected natural areas.
The island is part of Haida traditional territory and contains village and cultural sites used for centuries by the Haida people. European contact and later colonial administration affected settlement patterns, and more recent decades have seen cooperative protection arrangements between Canadian authorities and the Haida Nation.
Moresby Island lies south of Graham Island within the Haida Gwaii archipelago, off the northwest coast of mainland British Columbia. The island is remote from major population centres and is accessed by air services and boat from other islands or the BC coast.
- Wildlife and marine access: Home to temperate rainforest, seabird colonies and rich marine life along the surrounding shores; boat and sea-kayak trips show sea lions, whales and intertidal life.
- Access: Sandspit and small air services provide the main access points to the island from the British Columbia mainland and nearby islands.
What to See #
- Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve: Covers the southern portion of the island and many adjacent islets; a cooperative federal-provincial-First Nations protected area that includes old Haida village sites and extensive tracts of temperate old-growth rainforest.
How to Get to Moresby Island #
Moresby Island is the southern island of Haida Gwaii (British Columbia). To reach the archipelago, take the BC Ferries service from Prince Rupert to Skidegate (Graham Island) or fly into Sandspit (YZP) from Vancouver or Prince Rupert. There is no regular vehicle ferry service that connects Graham and Moresby for public transit; access to Moresby itself is typically by local charter boat or scheduled floatplane services from Haida Gwaii airports/ports - plan transfers in advance with local operators.
Tips for Visiting Moresby Island #
- If you plan to visit southern Moresby Island (Gwaii Haanas), make arrangements through licensed operators-access by boat or floatplane from Sandspit is weather dependent and requires pre-booking.
- For stays in Gwaii Haanas reserve, reserve your permit through the Gwaii Haanas visitor reservation system and consider joining a Haida-guided cultural tour to gain access to protected sites and cultural interpretation that many independent visitors miss.
- Plan itineraries around weather windows and tidal timings; sea conditions in the southern archipelago change quickly, so allow extra days for travel and expect limited facilities onshore.
Best Time to Visit Moresby Island #
Visit in summer (June-September) when access, services and wildlife-viewing opportunities are at their best.
