Monumental Arch of Palmyra
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman triumphal arch in Palmyra ruins
The Monumental Arch marked Palmyra’s Roman grandeur within the Syrian desert city; archaeological visitors and historians come for the ruined colonnades and the wider Roman and Nabatean remains at the site.
The Monumental Arch of Palmyra is a Roman-period triumphal arch that stood on the main colonnaded street of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria. It formed a key axial element linking major civic and religious monuments in the city.
As part of the larger archaeological ensemble, the arch sat amid a long colonnaded avenue and close to the Tetrapylon and the Temple of Bel, contributing to the city’s ceremonial layout and processional routes. The arch was a distinctive architectural feature of Palmyra’s Roman phase.
The arch dates to the Roman period of Palmyra, broadly the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, when the city developed major civic monuments. It suffered severe damage during the Syrian conflict in the 2010s and subsequently became the focus of international documentation and reconstruction efforts using original fragments and photographic records.
The arch is located within the archaeological site of Palmyra in Syria’s Homs Governorate. The ancient city lies in an oasis in the Syrian desert, northeast of the modern city of Homs and roughly two hundred kilometres or so northeast of Damascus.
