Monument to the Sun
Monument Contemporary waterfront solar-powered light and music installation
A circular solar installation on Zadar’s waterfront, the Monument to the Sun draws visitors at sunset to watch the light display and stroll the nearby Sea Organ and coastal promenade.
The Monument to the Sun (Pozdrav Suncu) is a contemporary public installation on the waterfront of Zadar, Croatia, consisting of a circular arrangement of solar-powered glass panels that produce a powered light display. Designed by architect Nikola Bašić, the work was completed in 2008 and is sited beside the Sea Organ.
The feature covers a paved circle at the seaward edge of Zadar’s waterfront and stores solar energy by day to drive a timed light show after dark; it complements the Sea Organ’s musical installation. It is a modern urban artwork rather than an archaeological or historic monument, and it is frequently visited at sunset and after dark by residents and tourists.
The project was installed as part of a wider redevelopment of Zadar’s seafront and is integrated with the city’s promenade and historic waterfront spaces. The location offers wide views over the Adriatic and is a focal point for evening public life in Zadar.
The installation sits on the western tip of Zadar’s peninsular old town on the Adriatic coast in Zadar County, directly adjacent to the Sea Organ and overlooking open sea lanes to the west.
- Installation date and function: The installation was completed in 2008 and sits on Zadar's western waterfront next to the Sea Organ, combining photovoltaic panels with a public light display activated at dusk.
- Best time to visit: Sunset is the most popular time to visit, when the light installation and adjacent Sea Organ draw crowds to the city waterfront.
How to Get to Monument to the Sun #
The Monument to the Sun (Greeting to the Sun) sits on Zadar’s seafront promenade next to the Sea Organ in Zadar city centre. It is an easy walk-about 5-10 minutes-from Zadar’s main bus station and from the old town.
By car, approach Zadar via the coastal road (D8) and use central parking; regional buses connect Zadar with other Dalmatian towns and terminate close enough for a short walk to the waterfront installation.
Tips for Visiting Monument to the Sun #
- Visit the Monument to the Sun on Zadar's seafront around sunset to see the full light installation and colour changes as dusk falls, and combine the visit with the adjacent Sea Organ sound installation for the complete experience.
- Approach from the Riva promenade and allow time to walk the waterfront-the best photographic light is during the blue hour after sunset, but it can be crowded then so arrive a little earlier if you prefer a quieter view.
- If you want fewer people in your photos, visit mid-morning on weekdays when cruise-ship crowds have dispersed and the installation is still impressive in daylight.
