Main image

The Monti Lattari are the mountain range that forms the backbone of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Campania, Italy, separating the Gulf of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno. The range produces the steep coastal relief that characterises the Sorrento and Amalfi areas.

Hiking trails, panoramic viewpoints and rural villages are the main attractions, with extensive views over the Bay of Naples, the island of Capri and the Amalfi coast. Short day excursions to accessible summits and plateaus are popular for scenery and walking without requiring technical climbing.

The mountains have long provided pasture, woodland and terraces for local agriculture and shaped settlement patterns on the peninsula; their slopes contain towns, paths and historical routes connecting coastal settlements.

The Monti Lattari run along the Sorrentine Peninsula in Campania, forming a natural divide between the Gulf of Naples to the north and the Gulf of Salerno to the south, immediately west of Naples.

  • Regional role: The range forms the spine of the Sorrentine Peninsula and contributes the steep coastal topography that defines the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento's dramatic cliffs.
