Montgomery Castle is the ruined remains of a medieval Norman castle overlooking the town of Montgomery in Powys, Wales. It was founded in the years after the Norman Conquest and developed through the 11th to 13th centuries as a regional stronghold.
The site exhibits the classic motte-and-bailey layout with an earthen motte and stone-built inner works; surviving masonry includes parts of the curtain wall and gate structures. The elevated position gives clear views over the surrounding Severn valley and the town below, which are principal reasons visitors come.
Historically the castle was established by Norman lords to control the borderlands and was rebuilt and modified through the medieval period; it fell into ruin in later centuries. Archaeological and cartographic records show phases of timber and later stone construction typical of frontier castles.
The castle stands on a raised natural mound at the edge of the market town of Montgomery, close to the England-Wales border and overlooking the River Severn corridor.
- Origins: Founded soon after the Norman Conquest and associated with the Norman lord Roger de Montgomery, it dates to the 11th century with later medieval rebuilding in stone.
- Visitor note: Now a ruin that is accessible to visitors, offering views over the town of Montgomery and the Severn valley from its elevated site.
