How to Get to Montego Bay

Montego Bay's international gateway is Sangster International Airport (MBJ), just a short drive from the main hotel areas and the Hip Strip. There is no passenger train service in Jamaica, so most arrivals use airport taxis, hotel shuttles, car hire, or intercity coach lines such as Knutsford Express.

By Air

Sangster International Airport (MBJ): Sangster International is Montego Bay’s main airport, located about 6-10 km (10-25 minutes by road) from the city centre. Options from MBJ include prepaid airport taxis and private transfers (typical private taxi/shuttle fares to central Montego Bay hotels run roughly US$20-40 / JMD 3,000-6,000 and take about 15-25 minutes), hotel-arranged shuttles (price depends on your hotel; often US$15-35), and car rental desks inside the terminal (drive time ~15-25 minutes to downtown). Airport transfer companies and many hotels post fixed fares at the arrivals area - confirm the price at the official booths before you travel.

Tinson Pen / Other airports: There are no regular commercial flights to Montego Bay from other Jamaican airports for international arrivals; Kingston’s Norman Manley/Tinson Pen area serves domestic and Kingston international traffic. For most visitors, Sangster International (MBJ) is the arrival airport to use.

By Train & Bus

Train: Jamaica does not have an active nationwide passenger rail service for regular intercity travel. There is no practical train option for arriving in or getting out of Montego Bay.

Bus / Coach (Intercity): Knutsford Express is the main premium coach operator serving Montego Bay, connecting to Kingston, Ocho Rios and other towns; services stop at Sangster Airport and central Montego Bay points. Typical travel times: Montego Bay ↔ Kingston ~3-4 hours depending on route; Montego Bay ↔ Ocho Rios ~1.5-2 hours. Fares vary by route and class - expect roughly US$15-35 (JMD equivalent) for intercity legs; check Knutsford Express’s website for current schedules and exact fares. For local travel, informal route taxis and minibuses run frequent short routes inside and around Montego Bay (see ‘Getting Around’ for details).

How to Get Around Montego Bay

Getting around Montego Bay is easiest by taxi/shuttle for first arrivals and short hotel-to-beach hops; for intercity travel use Knutsford Express. If you plan to explore beyond town, hire a car - local minibuses and route taxis are cheap but less predictable and best for short, local journeys.
