Monte Subasio
Mountain Limestone mountain overlooking Assisi, historic olive groves
Rising above Assisi in Umbria, Monte Subasio offers trails through oak and chestnut woods, a regional park, and easy access to Assisi’s churches and hilltown panoramas.
Monte Subasio is a limestone massif in Umbria, Italy, rising to about 1,290 m and forming the hill immediately east of the town of Assisi. It is known locally for the pinkish building stone quarried from its slopes.
Hiking routes and forest tracks cross the mountain and its foothills, offering panoramic views of Assisi, the Umbrian plain and the distant Apennines. Wooded slopes are typical Mediterranean mixed oak and chestnut; paths link small hamlets and rural tracks rather than formal visitor centres.
Stone from the massif has been quarried and used in local architecture for centuries and the slopes contain small chapels and hermitages linked to the religious landscape around Assisi. The mountain has long been used for grazing, forestry and small-scale quarrying rather than large-scale settlement.
The massif sits immediately above Assisi in central Umbria; the nearest major city is Perugia to the west. The landscape around it is a mix of cultivated valley floor and wooded uplands.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is 1,290 m and the summit ridge provides wide views over Assisi and the Umbrian plain.
