Montague Island (Alaska)

Montague Island is a remote, rugged island in the Gulf of Alaska/entrance to Prince William Sound in Alaska, noted for its seabird colonies and marine mammal haul-outs. The island has little to no permanent human habitation and is primarily of interest for wildlife and sea-state observations.

The island is frequented by day-trip boats and wildlife tours because of visible concentrations of seabirds, seals, sea lions and occasional sea otters in the surrounding waters; boating and shore-based wildlife watching are the main activities. There are extensive rocky shores and cliffs that provide nesting sites for coastal birds and haul-out areas for pinnipeds, making it important for marine wildlife viewing.

Montague Island has a history of occasional use by indigenous coastal peoples and later by commercial and subsistence fishers, but it has not supported sustained settlement. Its remote location has kept it relatively undisturbed compared with mainland sites.

The island lies off Alaska’s southern coast in the Gulf of Alaska / Prince William Sound region. Access is by boat or small craft from nearby coastal towns and ports; weather and sea conditions strongly influence travel plans.
