Mono Lake
Lake Alkaline terminal lake noted for tufa towers
East of the Sierra Nevada, Mono Lake is an alkaline, saline lake noted for tufas and migratory bird populations; visitors photograph tufa formations, birdwatch and hike nearby trails.
Mono Lake is a saline, alkaline lake in the Mono Basin of eastern California, notable for its striking tufa limestone towers and significance for migratory birds. The lake’s unusual chemistry and exposed carbonate formations make it a distinctive natural landmark.
Visitors commonly explore boardwalks and short trails among the tufa towers, watch birdlife that congregates on the lake, and visit interpretive exhibits at the local visitor centre. The shoreline offers photographic viewpoints and short hikes; water levels and exposed tufa vary with long-term hydrology.
In the mid-20th century water diversions lowered the lake and exposed tufa and shorelines; legal and restoration efforts since the 1970s have reduced diversions and helped stabilise lake levels. Ongoing management balances water use with ecological protection.
Mono Lake lies east of the Sierra Nevada near the town of Lee Vining and the Mammoth Lakes area, within a basin of volcanic rocks and high desert.
- Tufa viewing: Tufa towers form where underwater springs rich in carbonates meet alkaline lake water; the best viewing is from the South Tufa area at sunrise or sunset.
- Conditions: The lake is highly alkaline and saline and is an important habitat for migratory birds; dress for strong winds and large daily temperature swings when visiting.
What to See #
- South Tufa: South Tufa area - a boardwalk and low trails among the tufa towers provide the classic views and close access to the formations.
- Visitor centre: Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center - provides exhibits on the lake's ecology, geology and the region's water history.
- Lake islands: Paoha and Negit Islands - volcanic islands that emerge from the lake and are visible features on the water's surface.
How to Get to Mono Lake #
Mono Lake is reached via US‑395; the usual gateway town is Lee Vining, California, on US‑395. From Lee Vining follow the signed turnoffs (County Road/Highway 120 junctions) to the South Tufa Reserve and other viewing areas-parking lots are adjacent to the lake and the tufa formations are a short walk from the lot. The lake is an easy drive from Mammoth Lakes and from Yosemite’s Tioga Pass when the pass is open; services and tours to the lake depart from Lee Vining.
Tips for Visiting Mono Lake #
- Use the South Tufa parking area (off Highway 120/Mono Lake Road near Lee Vining) and plan to visit at sunrise or sunset when the tufa formations are best lit and mornings are far less crowded than midday.
- Stop at the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center before you explore the tufas - its exhibits explain the lake's unusual ecology and salinity, which enhances appreciation of the landscape many visitors miss.
- Instead of staying on the main shoreline, walk the short boardwalks that lead into the formations and explore quieter stretches of shore to find tufa groups away from the busiest photo spots.
