Monito Island is a small, uninhabited islet in the Mona Passage belonging administratively to Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. It lies close to the larger Mona Island and is notable for its small size and rugged coastline.

The islet offers sheer coastal cliffs and no visitor facilities; it is primarily of interest for natural-history observation, seabird colonies and the surrounding marine environment. There are no permanent settlements and no services for visitors on the island.

Monito has not supported permanent habitation in recent history and has been used intermittently for fishing and short-term visits from nearby islands. Its isolation and difficult landing conditions have limited human impact.

Monito sits in the Mona Passage northwest of Puerto Rico’s main island and just off the coast of Mona Island, within the political boundaries of the municipality of Mayagüez.

  • Landing and access: Landing is difficult because of steep cliffs and strong currents in the Mona Passage, and visits are normally regulated by Puerto Rican authorities.
