The Mongol Altayn Nuruu is the Mongolian portion of the Altai mountain system in western Mongolia, forming a high, glaciated mountain zone and containing several peaks that rise above 4,000 metres. It is a major natural backbone of Mongolia’s western provinces and includes extensive alpine terrain.
High-mountain features include multi-thousand-metre summits, glacial cirques and permanent snowfields; the Tavan Bogd massif is one of the best known parts of this system and hosts Mongolia’s highest points. The area is popular for multi-day treks, glacier approaches and alpine climbing in summer months.
The ranges are part of the broader Altai geology shaped by uplift and glaciation; they have no single builder or construction history but have been inhabited and used seasonally by mountain nomads and herding communities for centuries.
Geographically the Mongol Altai sits in far-western Mongolia, bordering Kazakhstan, Russia and China along portions of the broader Altai arc. The provincial capital Ölgii is the nearest major town and common logistical base for travel into the high country.
- Access hub: Access to the range's high-altitude areas is typically from the provincial capital Ölgii, which serves as the base for expeditions and treks into the Mongol Altai.
