Monbijou Palace
Palace Former Berlin palace once located by the Spree River
An 18th-century residence once on the Spree in Berlin-Mitte, Monbijou Palace was largely destroyed in the 20th century; today the site, Monbijou Park and nearby museums draw walkers and history-minded visitors.
Monbijou Palace was an 18th-century palace on the Spree in what is now the Mitte district of Berlin, Germany, known for its Baroque character and riverside location. The building did not survive the mid-20th century upheavals that changed central Berlin.
No substantial palace building remains on the original site; the area is now a public park and urban space close to Museum Island where traces and historical accounts of Monbijou Palace are interpreted. Surviving images and descriptions are available in local museums and archives.
Constructed in the 18th century as a riverside palace, it was used for courtly and residential purposes before suffering severe wartime damage. The damaged structure was demolished in 1959 by the postwar authorities.
The former palace site lies on the northern bank of the Spree near Museum Island in central Berlin, within the modern Mitte district.
- Fate of the Palace: Heavily damaged during World War II and subsequently demolished in 1959; the former site is now occupied by Monbijou Park and adjacent modern developments in central Berlin.
