Monastiraki developed as a commercial and social hub during the Ottoman and modern periods and retains several historic buildings that reflect the area’s layered past. The square’s name derives from a small monastery that once stood nearby.
Set on the northwestern slope below the Acropolis, Monastiraki Square sits in central Athens within the older Plaka/Monastiraki district and is served by the Monastiraki metro station.

Monastiraki Square is served directly by the Monastiraki metro station (Lines 1 and 3). It is a short walk from Syntagma Square and the pedestrian stretch of Ermou Street, and within easy walking distance of the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora.

- Early morning is the best time for the flea market before souvenir stallkeepers set up; twilight offers good light for photos of Hadrian's Library nearby.
