Monastiraki

Monastiraki is a historic neighborhood and market quarter in central Athens, Greece, known for its square, flea market and close proximity to major ancient monuments.

The modern name derives from a small monastery that once stood in the area; during Ottoman rule and later periods the district evolved into a commercial quarter. Many of today’s buildings date from the Ottoman and 19th-century periods, layered over ancient remains.

Monastiraki sits in the historic heart of Athens, immediately north of the Acropolis and within short walking distance of Syntagma Square and the main pedestrian routes of the old city.

• Name origin: The name means "little monastery" and derives from a small Byzantine-era monastery that once stood in the area; the quarter is centered on a lively flea market aimed at both locals and tourists.
• Transport: Monastiraki Metro station provides direct access to the district and is a common starting point for walking tours of the historic centre and the Acropolis.
