Monastery of Irache

The Monastery of Irache is a medieval Benedictine monastery complex near Estella-Lizarra in Navarre, northern Spain, notable as a historic religious site on the Camino de Santiago. The complex includes monastic buildings and a large church that remains a prominent local landmark.

The principal draw is the former abbey church with its mixed Romanesque and later architectural features, alongside monastic cloisters and adjacent winery installations that receive many pilgrims and visitors. A public wine fountain installed near the monastery by a local bodega is a famous local attraction for walkers on the Camino.

Irache was established in the Middle Ages and long served as a Benedictine house that supported pilgrims and local religious life; its buildings were adapted and rebuilt in successive centuries. The site has shifted from monastic to parish and cultural uses while retaining material traces of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque phases.

The monastery sits beside the town of Ayegui, adjacent to Estella-Lizarra, in the western part of Navarre along the historic pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
