About Aralar Range
The Aralar Range is a limestone mountain massif in northern Spain, straddling parts of Navarre and the Basque province of Gipuzkoa and forming part of the Basque Mountains. It is characterized by rugged karst terrain, high pastures and a network of trails used for hiking and shepherding.
The area includes open limestone ridges, dolines and small caves, and has long been used for pastoralism, with stone shepherd huts and seasonal grazing. It contains a number of peaks and locally important religious sites that attract walkers and pilgrims.
Human use of the range stretches back many centuries with traditional grazing shaping much of the landscape; religious sites such as the Sanctuary of San Miguel de Aralar have medieval origins and have drawn pilgrims for generations. How to Get to Aralar Range
Drive from Pamplona (about 45-60 minutes) or from San Sebastián/Donostia (longer). There are small parking areas at trailheads; regional buses serve nearby towns but reach into the highlands only intermittently. Local tourist offices in Basque Country provide maps and seasonal trail advice.
