Monastery of Geghard and the Upper Azat Valley

The Monastery of Geghard and the Upper Azat Valley is a medieval rock-cut monastery in Kotayk Province, Armenia, inscribed for its partly hewn structures and 12th to 13th century standing buildings set within a river valley landscape.

While the site preserves architecture mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, the location long served as a religious centre and was developed by medieval Armenian patrons into a major monastic complex. It has remained a pilgrimage destination and has seen conservation work to stabilise rock-cut chambers.

The monastery sits in the Azat River valley of Kotayk Province, eastern slopes near the village area below the Garni Gorge, with the complex set against limestone cliffs rather than on open plain.

• Rock-cut architecture: The complex is noted for rock-cut churches and chambers hewn into the cliff as well as carved khachkars; some interior chambers are partially carved from the living rock, producing distinctive acoustics and light effects.
