The Monashee Mountains are a mountain range in southeastern British Columbia, Canada, and form part of the Columbia Mountains. They are an extensive, largely wild range notable for alpine and subalpine landscapes.

The range contains extensive forests, ridges and alpine basins used for hiking, mountaineering and backcountry skiing, with long remote valleys and glaciated sections at higher elevations. Outdoor users find multi-day routes, remote peaks and technical winter terrain rather than developed day-use infrastructure.

Shaped by tectonic uplift and repeated glaciation, the range has supported local resource uses such as forestry and localized mining while remaining sparsely populated. Over the 20th and 21st centuries the area has seen increasing recreational use alongside continued resource activities.

Situated in southeastern British Columbia, the Monashee Mountains lie inland from the Pacific coast and form part of the interior mountain systems of the province. The range covers a large area of rugged terrain between major interior valleys.

Tips for Visiting Monashee Mountains #

  • Best visited in late summer to early autumn (July-September) when high routes and access roads are most likely to be snow‑free and weather is more stable, avoiding spring avalanche season.
  • Access is commonly via long forest and logging roads to remote trailheads-expect limited services and cellular coverage, so plan your route, drive times and road conditions in advance.
  • To avoid crowds, head midweek and push beyond the nearest popular day-use areas into less‑visited lakes, ridges or backcountry valleys; those who stop at the main trailheads miss much of the range's solitude.

Best Time to Visit Monashee Mountains #

Go in summer for the best access to snow-free trails and alpine hiking; winter is for experienced skiers and mountaineers.

Summer
June-August · daytime mountain temps often ~5-15°C (warmer in valleys)
Best time for hiking, climbing and access to higher trails once snow has melted; long daylight but weather can change quickly at elevation.
Late spring / early summer
May-June · wide/variable depending on elevation; valleys warmer, higher routes often near freezing
Snowmelt can make trails muddy and some high passes still snowbound - good for lower-elevation hikes and wildflowers if you accept variable conditions.
Winter
December-March · well below 0°C at altitude
Snowy and cold with extensive winter/backcountry skiing and mountaineering conditions; significant avalanche risk - suitable for experienced winter users.
