Monadhliath Mountains
Mountains Remote Scottish mountain range with moorland and ridges
East of the Cairngorms, the Monadhliath Mountains offer wide moorland, river valleys and remote hills. Walkers and mountain bikers come for long ridge walks, deer watching and quieter Highland routes away from busier trails.
A range of rounded uplands and plateaus in the central Highlands of Scotland, composed largely of heather moor and peatland rather than rocky crags.
The area is valued for remote hillwalking, long-distance routes and upland wildlife such as red deer and ground-nesting birds. Tracks and estate roads cross the moorland but much of the terrain is open and sparsely populated, so itineraries often involve long stretches between access points.
Historically the Monadhliath has been managed for deer stalking and hill agriculture, and estates have shaped land use patterns such as grouse management and forestry. Modern land use continues to blend sporting, conservation and renewable-energy interests.
Sited in the Scottish Highlands to the east of the Great Glen and south of the main Cairngorm massif, the Monadhliath occupies a broad, upland area within Highland council territory.
- Character: Predominantly upland moor and peatland, the range is quieter and less developed than neighbouring mountain areas, offering remote walking and wildlife observation.
